MA Art Psychotherapy

University of Roehampton London, United Kingdom

Course Overview

In our art psychotherapy program, you will be guided by leading experts who aim to equip you with the skills, experience, and confidence necessary to thrive as an art psychotherapist in both challenging and rewarding environments. Upon graduation, you become eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), opening doors to opportunities in various settings such as psychiatric hospitals, social services, special education, prisons, and the voluntary sector. The program is thoughtfully structured into three key areas: theory, experiential learning, and work placement experience. The theoretical component encompasses child developmental and psychodynamic principles, complemented by art therapy theory and Jungian analytical psychology. This comprehensive perspective is situated within the broader field of analytical psychotherapy, providing you with a robust theoretical foundation that significantly informs your clinical practice. A crucial aspect of the program is the supervised clinical placement, which provides you with the opportunity to complete one hundred mandatory days of practice during your training. These placements are diverse, spanning mental health settings (including the NHS, psychiatric hospitals, and day centers), disability services, hospitals, social services, special education, and other relevant environments. For full-time students, the program kicks off with an intensive week, followed by two taught days, two days of clinical placement, and one day dedicated to studio practice each week. Part-time students also begin with an intensive week, followed by one day per week at the university and a minimum of one additional day on clinical placement. Weekly attendance for personal therapy is compulsory for all students aspiring to become professional registered practitioners. This comprehensive structure ensures a well-rounded and immersive learning experience.
