Course Overview

The Comics and Concept Art program offers a dynamic learning experience through a diverse range of teaching methods, blending project work, software and art-based workshops, and lectures. Assessment is conducted through a mix of group and individual project work, requiring submissions such as portfolios, sketches, storyboards, digital artwork, and presentations. The emphasis extends beyond technical skills to include the development of analytical thinking, critical curiosity, and effective writing skills. During the first year, students engage in foundational modules within the broader animation program, gaining valuable insights into the digital media industry. The curriculum encompasses 2D and 3D animation, games, and visual effects, fostering a collaborative environment that expands professional networks. Digital illustration techniques, life drawing, character and environment design, as well as exploration of comics, animation, and film history provide a comprehensive foundation. The flexibility to switch to a different animation degree course after the first year accommodates evolving passions. In the second year, students refine their illustrative style and design skills, creating characters, creatures, props, and environments. The focus shifts to producing comic narratives tailored for both print and digital publications. The year culminates in a major comic or concept art project, encouraging collaboration across the digital animation program. The third year involves the completion of a dissertation exploring an area of popular culture linked to comics and concept art. Students undertake an ambitious project, leveraging their design expertise, digital illustration proficiency, and 3D software skills to bring original ideas to fruition. The emphasis on project management and leadership qualities is evident as students take a concept from initial ideation to production. Graduates emerge with an impressive professional portfolio, showreel, and website, poised to launch successful careers in the dynamic and creative field of animation and illustration.
