BA (Hons) History and Journalism

University of Hertfordshire, United Kingdom

Course Overview

The Journalism and History course offers a dynamic and comprehensive exploration of the foundational principles of journalism and historical studies. In the first year, students delve into the essentials of journalism, acquiring crucial skills while also delving into historical contexts related to faith, magic, medicine, and campaigns for freedom and equality. The curriculum emphasizes ethical considerations in media practice and provides a broad understanding of the media industry. Moving into the second year, students deepen their knowledge of journalism through focused studies in news, features, and radio. Simultaneously, they have the freedom to tailor their historical studies, choosing from modules that span family life in the 18th century, crime and society in the 16th century, and British imperialism. The flexibility of the program allows students to shape their academic journey according to their interests. A distinctive feature of the course is the option for a work placement or study abroad experience between the second and final year. This unique opportunity not only enriches students' personal and cultural experiences but also enhances their CVs. The decision to pursue this option or proceed directly to the final year is made in the second year, offering ample time for thoughtful consideration. In the final year, students undertake a culminating History project, known as a dissertation, where they conduct original research on a topic of their choice. An intriguing option is the opportunity to engage in an oral history project, seamlessly integrating journalism and history expertise. On the journalism front, students can specialize in online journalism, global news reporting, or craft a personalized journalism portfolio. This specialization allows for hands-on experience in real news settings, such as newspapers, magazines, or newsrooms, providing a solid foundation for future careers in the dynamic field of journalism.
