BA (Hons) History and English Literature

University of Hertfordshire, United Kingdom

Course Overview

The BA History and English Literature program offers a unique intersection of two disciplines, recognizing the interconnectedness of literature and historical narratives. The curriculum embraces both traditional and modern perspectives, reflecting the evolving global landscape of the 21st century. In the first year, students engage in close analysis of literary texts, exploring works by diverse authors such as Danez Smith, Sylvia Plath, Shakespeare, and Zadie Smith. Simultaneously, they navigate the Historian's Toolkit, gaining proficiency in handling primary sources and understanding historiography. The second year delves into the 18th century, exemplifying the synergy between English and History. Exploring print culture and the emergence of the novel is enriched by a contextual understanding of the political landscape. A unique feature is the option for a work placement or study abroad experience between the second and final year. In the final year, students have the flexibility to tailor their courses to align with their interests and academic pursuits. Themes may include African American literature, young adult fiction, or literary adaptations in English Literature, while History modules may focus on specific regions like Europe or periods such as the 20th century. Throughout the program, the emphasis remains on the analysis and interpretation of texts, highlighting the transferable skills between literature and historical study. This interdisciplinary approach provides students with a well-rounded education, preparing them for a dynamic and interconnected world.
