Course Overview

The BA English Language with English Language Teaching program offers a unique blend of linguistic exploration and practical knowledge for those interested in teaching English as a foreign language. In your first year, you'll dive into core English Language modules and explore language and mind, where you'll analyze child speech transcripts and examine language acquisition. Additionally, you'll study the diversity of English language use, including regional variants, pidgin and creole English, language and ethnicity, and slang and street English. Two English Language Teaching (ELT) modules each year will provide insights into the teaching aspect of the program. The second year focuses on core modules in English grammar and the sounds of English. You have the option to explore theories of language development and can choose a language competencies module leading to a work placement. This practical experience could involve fieldwork or observing teaching and learning methods in a college setting. The program offers a career development module in the second year, preparing you for English Language teaching work placements, such as teaching phonics to primary school pupils, working at a special needs school, volunteering with the Stroke Association, shadowing speech and language therapists, or assisting with specialist language teaching in a sixth form college. Between the second and final year, you have the option to study abroad or undertake a work placement for up to a year, providing valuable experiences and enhancing your CV. In your final year, you can choose from various modules, including child language and communication, clinical linguistics, gender and language, and formulaic language, all informed by the research specialisms of the academics. Additionally, you'll study Global Englishes and complete a compulsory project focusing on a specific aspect of English Language teaching, allowing you to apply your knowledge in a practical setting. This combined program not only provides a solid foundation in English Language but also prepares you for a career in English Language Teaching, offering a well-rounded and practical approach to language education.
