Course Overview

The English Language and Creative Writing program offers a captivating journey through the intricacies of language and the artistry of creative expression. In your first year, you'll delve into the foundational elements of language, exploring phonetics (the study of speech sounds) and grammar while honing your academic writing skills. The Creative Writing component guides you on the path to becoming a writer, focusing on constructing words in fiction genres and writing for the screen. Optional modules such as language and mind and language in the media allow you to tailor your studies to your interests. The second year continues the exploration of grammatical structures and phonetics while offering a variety of optional modules. You can delve into vocabulary, language in society, playwriting, poetry, literature, or even opt for a module on English language teaching to speakers of other languages. The program provides flexibility for you to shape your studies based on your preferences and aspirations. A unique opportunity presents itself between the second and final year, allowing you to undertake a study abroad experience or a work placement for up to a year. This not only enriches your personal and cultural experiences but also enhances your CV with valuable practical exposure. In your third year, you have the chance to undertake a Creative Writing project focusing on either poetry or prose. This project serves as the culmination of your three years of writing studies, allowing you to showcase your creative prowess. Additionally, you can opt for an English Language project where independent research in an area of linguistics of your choice becomes the focal point. Engage in a weekly short story writing workshop, where you produce your own writing and engage in discussions with fellow students. Other modules such as clinical linguistics, child language, and meaning and context provide a well-rounded understanding of language in diverse contexts. Throughout the program, the integration of linguistics and creative writing offers a unique and balanced perspective. This combination of analytical and creative skills equips you with a versatile set of tools for your future career, whether in writing, linguistics, or related fields.
